March 2007
Saturday 10 March 2007
Sat 10 Mar. 401 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, 19103. 215-446-3045. Gershman Y Jewish Community Center - [email][events]
Open your Heart and Soul on Saturday evening, March 10, 2007, at the second annual concert benefiting The Gershman Y. That night The Y will feature a double bill of the Klezmatics, the premier Klezmer band in the US, and Philadelphia's own Dixie Hummingbirds, the iron men of gospel music, for an exciting evening of music and revelry. We guarantee you will sing along and dance in the aisles as The Y celebrates faith through music.
The Klezmatics play soul-stirring Jewish roots music for our time, recreating klezmer in arrangements and compositions that combine Jewish identity and mysticism with a contemporary zeitgeist and a postmodern aesthetic. How many singing groups reach their 75th anniversary? One group qualifies - The Dixie Hummingbirds. Formed in Greenville, South Carolina in 1928, and transplanted to Philly in the 1940s, these Grammy winners have truly earned their distinction as "The Iron Men of Gospel".
The Gershman Y is the Center City Arts and Cultural Branch of the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Philadelphia. The Mission of The Gershman Y is to serve as a dynamic regional center for arts and culture, retaining a commitment to Jewish culture and identity while appealing to a diverse audience through wide-ranging programming.
