The Rape of Europa begins and ends with Gustav Klimt’s famed Gold Portrait, stolen from Viennese Jews in 1938 and now, the most expensive painting ever sold. This extraordinary documentary is based on the award-winning book of the same name by author, Lynn H. Nicholas. It takes us into a whirlwind journey of greed, warfare and fanaticism that threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe during WWII. The Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. Heroic American and European historians and curators fought back with a miraculous campaign to rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden and stolen treasures. More than 60 years later, families still struggle to recover their properties and nations fight over the fate of ill-gotten spoils of war. Narrated by Joan Allen.
