A series of events, starting in 1940, form the ingredients of an intriguing thriller that takes place in the small Dutch fishing village of Maassluis. Someone has murdered Joost Vroom during an evangelical assembly in the village in 1958. Vroost was a despised policeman during WWII who took over Jewish businesses and properties at very low prices. Twelve year-old Alexander, a gifted musician who is playing piano for the assembly, is the only eyewitness to the murder. Years later, Alexander begins to look for answers. One of his suspects is his future father-in-law, the mysterious conductor Aron Oberstein who went into hiding in Maassluis, after the fishing boat he tried to escape on was intercepted by the Germans. Vroost was the skipper and owner of the boat. It is at Alexander’s wedding banquet that the shocking truth is finally revealed.
