Makom: Seeking Sacred Space Symposium

Mon 3 Mar, 7-9:30 pm. Symposium exploring the theme of the photographic exhibit at the Emet Gallery. Speakers include Evelyn Tauben, Dr. Reesa Greenberg, and Janice Rosen presenting on topics ranging from civil sacred space in Israel to the role of Judaica in secularizing the sacred. Mon 10 Mar, 4:30-5:30 pm. Who were the Romanian Jews and why did they come to Canada in such sizeable numbers at the turn of the century? How did they differ from other Jewish immigrants? Join Lara Rabinovitch as she traces the early Romanian Jewish immigrant experience in Canada. Lara Rabinovitch is the recipient of a Concordia Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies’ Fellowship and is a Ph.D. candidate at New York University. Montreal Jewish Artists

Thursday, 20th March 2008 – 7:30p.m. Esther Trépanier will speak about her new book, Jewish Painters of Montreal: Witnesses of Their Time, 1930 – 1948, as well as the exhibition at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. There will be a small exhibition of works from private collections on view from 7p.m. Friday, 21st March 2008 – 8:30p.m. Art exhibition will be on view at an Oneg Shabbat.
