Nina, played by the riveting Agnès Jaoui, is the ingenious and loving director of a children's shelter in France at the end of World War II. Set up by the government for Jewish children who survived the war in hiding, the home suddenly takes on new arrivals – young survivors from concentration camps. Total chaos ensues. The newcomers have their own culture of survival. They fight, they speak other languages. The more religious ones demand that Nina kosher the kitchen. The story of how, with Nina’s help, the children manage to adjust and accept each other while dealing with their deep differences is unforgettable. This compelling film has been described as a beautiful and engaging “hymn to life.”
