Call for papers, due 12/1/3. Call for information, and the submission of titles and abstracts (ca. 250 words). An international conference: Turks and Palestine: A 1000 Years of Relations on 6/21 to 6/23/2004 with Itzhaq Ben-Zvi Institute For the Study of Eretz-Israel and the Heritage of Sephardi and Eastern Jewry. The language of the conference will be English, with possibility of simultaneous translation to enable papers in Hebrew and Turkish. Since the ninth century C.E., Turkish military and political elites have played a key role in the history of Palestine. Papers should combine original research with broad issues in the history of the country, the larger region and beyond. Some subsidies for travel and stay in Jerusalem should be available.
