The Great Escape: Nine Jews Who Fled Hitler and Changed the World Kati Marton was born in Hungary. Her parents survived the Holocaust of World War II but never spoke about it. Raised a Roman Catholic, she only learned late in life and by accident from a third party that her grandparents were exterminated at Auschwitz concentration camp. Marton has combined a career as a reporter and writer with human rights advocacy. She has reported for ABC News as a foreign correspondent and National Public Radio as well as in print journalism and books. She is the chairwoman of the International Women's Health Coalition, and a director (former chairwoman) of the Committee to Protect Journalists and other bodies including the International Rescue Committee, Human Rights
Her latest book, The Great Escape: Nine Jews Who Fled Hitler and Changed the World, released in October of 2006 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, has received wide critical acclaim. Marton brings to life an unknown chapter of World War II: the tale of nine men who grew up in Budapest's brief Golden Age, then driven from Hungary by anti-Semitism, fled to the West and changed the world. Marton follows four history changing scientists, two major movie makers, two immortal photographers and one seminal writer. Marton discusses her book followed by plenty of time for Q&A.
