Pursuing Nazi War Criminals and Other Human Rights Violators

Fri 4 Dec, 1-3:30 pm. 7605 Old York Rd, Melrose Park, 19027. Miri Hacohen, (215)635-7300 148. Gratz College - [email][events]

Eli M. Rosenbaum, Esquire 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm In this course, Mr. Rosenbaum will discuss how he and his colleagues at the Office of Special Investigations (OSI), Criminal Division, United States Department of Justice, have tracked down and taken action to denaturalize and deport or extradite over one hundred Nazi war criminals who had illegally entered the United States and lived undercover.

OSI’s efforts have also thwarted attempts by nearly two hundred suspected Nazi and Japanese war criminals to enter the country. Twelve cases are currently being litigated, and dozens more are under investigation. One of the most controversial OSI cases has been that of John Demjanjuk, the retired Ohio auto worker who was at one time accused of being the brutal Treblinka death camp guard known as “Ivan the Terrible.” Demjanjuk was deported to Germany in May of this year and will soon go on trial in Munich on charges of having been an accessory to the murder of more than 27,000 Jews at the Sobibor death camp.

Mr. Rosenbaum will also address the recently expanded mandate by Congress for OSI to prosecute criminal and civil cases against participants in atrocities committed in more recent conflicts, such as those in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia. OSI recently commenced a criminal prosecution for naturalization fraud against a former Rwandan citizen. This marks the first time in U.S. history that the government will attempt to prove genocide in a federal district court.
