Performer Bios:
Phyllis Chapell plays and sings great songs from all over the world. Her repertoire features songs in 10 languages from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Israel, and the U.S. Her 3-octave vocals are supported and complemented by her acoustic guitar play capturing the essence of musical styles from elegant classical arias, folk, jazz and original ballads.

Ken Ulansey Penn Council for the Arts winner, plays alto and soprano sax and clarinet. He is a musical chameleon playing contemporary classical music, jazz, latin, folk and jewish/klezmer music. Ken has toured extensively in Europe and the United States, played on nearly two hundred recordings, and worked in collaboration with dancers, film-makers, poets and storytellers. Ulansey’s music has taken him all around the world, however his global endeavors have done more than expose him to large international audiences. During a year in the Middle East, traveling through the Himalayas, Ulansey grasped the importance of continuing Holocaust and genocide education. “Once you’ve traveled the world and seen the suffering, it’s hard to come back and just play music,” he says.

Ken and Phyllis have been blending their instruments and voices together for over 15 years, recording in each other’s many projects, mixing influences, and broadening each other’s musical outlooks. As a duo, they draw from traditions as diverse as the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Brazil, Ireland, India and of course the American songbook. Their travels through most of these cultures lend an authenticity to their music that is wonderful and rare.
