November 2011
Tuesday 1 November 2011
Tue 1 Nov, 6 pm. 6-8 PM A light dinner will be served. On November 1, Rodeph Shalom will screen Nicole Opper's award-winning documentary, "Off and Running." This 2009 movie introduces Avery, a teenage track star and adopted Jewish, African-American daughter of two mothers. We follow Avery as she begins to explore her African-American identity and wrestles with complex questions of what it means to be both black and Jewish. After the film screening, Rabbi Eli Freedman will facilitate a conversation about Judaism and identity, during which we will consider how Jews of color find a home within both Rodeph Shalom and the larger Jewish community. Future programs will be based on reactions to this first program. If you wish to be involved in helping us plan, please contact Cath. 615 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, 19123-2495.
