Herman P. and Sophia Taubman Foundation Endowed Symposia in Jewish Studies University of California, Santa Barbara Fifteenth Anniversary Inaugural Event Simon Sebag Montefiore "Jerusalem" Thursday, November 3 / 8:00 p.m. / Free UCSB Campbell Hall Event Description: Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgement Day and the battlefield of today’s clash of civilizations. In his latest bestseller, Jerusalem: A Biography, Simon Sebag Montefiore presents an epic history of the world’s most contested place through the lives of those who created, destroyed, conquered, wrote about—and believed in—the Holy City.

The Sunday Times called his masterwork “a fittingly vast and dazzling portrait of Jerusalem, utterly compelling from start to finish.” It includes all of the key historical figures in a vast panorama that brings every epoch and titan blazingly to life, from King David to Jesus and Muhammad; from Maccabees and Herods to Churchill; from Cleopatra, the Caliphs, and Saladin to Rasputin; from Dayan, Arafat, and King Hussein to the author’s ancestor, Sir Moses Montefiore, who founded the new city of Jerusalem 150 years ago. This biography illuminates the essence of holiness, power, and empire, in the only city to have existed twice—in heaven and on earth. Copies of Jerusalem will be available for purchase and signing at this free, public event.

Speaker Profile: Simon Sebag Montefiore is the international best-selling author of Catherine the Great & Potemkin which was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson, Duff Cooper, and Marsh Biography Prizes, Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar which won the History Book of the Year Prize at the British Book Awards, and Young Stalin which won the Costa Biography Award (UK), the LA Times Book Prize for Biography (US), Le Grand Prix de la Biographie Politique (France) and the Kreisky Prize for Political Literature (Austria). His books are published in more than thirty-five languages. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, he lives in London.
