To the Survivors The 8th Air Corps' Bombing of Germany in WWII Henry S. Maxfield, Author of To the Survivors Henry S. Maxfield served as a navigator on a B-24 Liberator bomber in the 8th Air Force in WWII. He and his crew were shot down by flak over Gelsenkirchen in November, 1944. Six of the crew of ten were killed. He and the three other survivors were made Prisoners of War. Now retired, Maxfield is the author of several books. His most recent, a historical novel titled To the Survivors, is based largely on his own experiences as an aviator and a POW.
