In 1946 the Touro Synagogue was designated as a National Historical Site by the United States Government. Touro Synagogue Jeshuat Israel Congregation founded in 1658. The oldest synagogue building in the United States was designed by Peter Harrison. Ground was broken August 1, 1759. It was dedicated on December 2, 1763. The building was reopened for religious services on August 2, 1850. Touro Synagogue is closed for restoration until December, 2005. During this time services will be held at the Levi Gale House at 85 Touro St. across from Touro Synagogue. Touro Synagogue is orthodox and uses Sephardic liturgy. There is separate seating for men and for women. Proper dress is required, no jeans, shorts or sleeveless tops.
